Easy Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

For the seven days following Passover, what bread was Israel commanded to eat?

  1. AUnleavened breadCorrect
  2. BThe bread of the Presence
  3. CBarley loaves mixed with honey
  4. DLeavened wheat bread

Answer: Unleavened bread

Exodus 12:15 · ESV

Leaven was purged from every house for a week, recalling the haste of the exodus when there was no time for dough to rise. Scripture later takes up leaven as a picture of corruption that spreads quietly through a whole lump.

Exodus 12:15 commands seven days of unleavened bread with all leaven removed from Israel's houses, and Leviticus 23:6 sets the feast in the calendar.

Why not this one. That bread sat in twelve loaves on the golden table in the Holy Place and was eaten by the priests each Sabbath. It was never the Passover bread of the households.

What did the law of gleaning require of an Israelite harvesting his field?

  1. AHe was to leave the edges of the field and what fell for the poor and the sojournerCorrect
  2. BHe was to bring the whole first harvest to the priests
  3. CHe was to leave the entire field unharvested every third year
  4. DHe was to sell his surplus grain only at the sanctuary

Answer: He was to leave the edges of the field and what fell for the poor and the sojourner

Leviticus 19:9-10 · ESV

Provision for the poor was built into the harvest rather than left to sentiment. The owner simply stopped short of the edges and did not go back over the vineyard, and the needy gathered for themselves by their own work.

Leviticus 19:9-10 forbids reaping a field to its very border or stripping a vineyard bare, reserving the remainder for the poor and the sojourner; Ruth 2 shows the law in practice.

Why not this one. Israel did bring firstfruits to the sanctuary, but a portion rather than the whole harvest, and that was an offering to God distinct from the law of gleaning.

Hard Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

At the ordination in Leviticus 8, Moses put blood on the right earlobe, right thumb and right big toe of Aaron and his sons. From which animal did that blood come?

  1. AThe ram of ordinationCorrect
  2. BThe bull of the sin offering
  3. CThe ram of the burnt offering
  4. DThe lamb of the daily offering

Answer: The ram of ordination

Leviticus 8:22-24 · ESV

Three animals were used in order: a bull for sin, a first ram wholly burnt, and a second ram of ordination whose blood consecrated ear, hand and foot, so that the priest would hear, do and walk as a man set apart to God.

Leviticus 8:22-24 identifies the second ram as the ram of ordination and describes the blood applied to Aaron and to his sons.

Why not this one. The bull's blood was put on the horns of the altar with Moses' finger and the rest poured out at its base, to purify the altar itself. None of it was applied to the priests' bodies.

Easy Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

According to Exodus 20:3, what does the first commandment forbid Israel from having before the LORD?

  1. AGraven images
  2. BOther godsCorrect
  3. CFalse prophets
  4. DForeign altars

Answer: Other gods

Exodus 20:3 · ESV

The commandment does not say the LORD is the greatest of the gods; it forbids Israel to hold any others at all in his presence. In a world where nations kept whole assemblies of deities and simply added new ones, exclusivity was the shocking demand. Everything else in the Decalogue depends on this one, since obligations to God and neighbor only follow once it is settled who God is.

Exodus 20:3

Why not this one. This is the second commandment's subject, and the two are so close that some traditions number them as one. The distinction is between whom Israel worships and how: images are forbidden even as attempts to represent the true God, as Aaron's golden calf later shows.

Medium Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

How many loaves of bread were placed on the table of showbread (the table of the presence) in the tabernacle each Sabbath?

  1. ASeven
  2. BTen
  3. CTwelveCorrect
  4. DFourteen

Answer: Twelve

Leviticus 24:5–6 · ESV

Twelve loaves, one for each tribe, arranged in two rows of six on the table of pure gold with frankincense set beside each row. They were replaced every Sabbath and the old bread went to Aaron and his sons to eat in a holy place. This is the bread David and his men ate at Nob, and Jesus cites the incident in Mark 2:25–26 when his disciples are accused of breaking the Sabbath.

Leviticus 24:5–9; Mark 2:25–26

Why not this one. Seven is the tabernacle's other recurring number, carried by the lamps of the golden lampstand standing opposite this very table in the Holy Place. The loaves follow the count of the tribes instead, which is why there are twelve.

Hard Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

What was engraved on the two onyx stones set on the shoulder pieces of the high priest's ephod?

  1. AThe names of the sons of Israel, six on each stoneCorrect
  2. BThe words of the first commandment
  3. CThe names of Aaron and his four sons
  4. DThe dimensions of the tabernacle

Answer: The names of the sons of Israel, six on each stone

Exodus 28:9-12 · ESV

Aaron carried the tribes into God's presence on his shoulders as stones of remembrance, just as the breastpiece carried their names over his heart. The high priest never appeared before God for himself alone but always as the representative of the people.

Exodus 28:9-12 commands two onyx stones engraved with the names of the sons of Israel, six on each according to their birth, set on the shoulder pieces of the ephod.

Why not this one. The garments represented the twelve tribes rather than the priestly family. The names of Aaron's sons were engraved nowhere on the ephod or the breastpiece.

Easy Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

Which tribe of Israel was set apart for priestly service?

  1. AThe tribe of Levi.Correct
  2. BThe tribe of Judah.
  3. CThe tribe of Benjamin.
  4. DThe tribe of Simeon.

Answer: The tribe of Levi.

Numbers 3:6 · ESV

Levi was set apart, but not evenly: the priesthood proper belonged to Aaron and his sons, while the rest of the tribe served as their assistants, guarding and carrying the tent. Numbers 3:12 gives the reason for the arrangement, that the LORD took the Levites in place of every firstborn son of Israel, who were his by right after the Passover.

Numbers 3:6–13

Why not this one. Judah is the tribe of kings, and the mix-up matters enough that Hebrews 7:14 makes a point of it: Jesus descends from Judah, a tribe with no priestly claim under Moses, which is why his priesthood has to be traced to Melchizedek instead.

Medium Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

What does “Leviticus” primarily deal with?

  1. ALaws of worship, sacrifice, and holiness for the priests and people of Israel.Correct
  2. BThe history of Israel’s wandering in the wilderness for forty years.
  3. CMoses’ farewell speeches and the renewal of the covenant before entering Canaan.
  4. DThe census and organization of the twelve tribes of Israel for military service.

Answer: Laws of worship, sacrifice, and holiness for the priests and people of Israel.

Leviticus picks up where Exodus stops. The tent has just been built and filled with God's glory, and the question the book answers is how a sinful people may approach it and live. It opens with the five offerings, moves to the ordination of the priests, then to clean and unclean, the Day of Atonement, and the holiness code with its feasts. Hebrews reads the whole system as a copy and shadow whose ceremonies are fulfilled in Christ.

Leviticus 1–27; Hebrews 8:5

Why not this one. The book's name comes from the Levites, so tribal organization sounds like a fair guess. That material is Numbers, which opens with the muster of the fighting men and the arrangement of the camp around the tent.

Hard Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

Leviticus 16 describes two goats chosen by lot on the Day of Atonement. One lot was marked “for Azazel.” What phrase marked the other?

  1. A“For the congregation”
  2. B“For the LORD”Correct
  3. C“For the sanctuary”
  4. D“For the burnt offering”

Answer: “For the LORD”

Leviticus 16:8 · ESV

Two goats stood at the tent entrance and the lots decided which was which, so no human judgment assigned either role. The goat whose lot fell to the LORD was killed as a sin offering for the people and its blood carried inside the veil; the other was presented alive to make atonement by being sent away. Leviticus 16:9–10 spells out both outcomes.

Leviticus 16:7–10

Why not this one. Burnt offerings were indeed part of the day, since Leviticus 16:24 has the high priest offer them for himself and the people afterward. But the goat chosen by lot here was a sin offering, and the text pairs the lots as one for the LORD and one for Azazel.

Easy Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

Besides "tabernacle," what name does Exodus most often use for the structure Moses built?

  1. AThe tent of meetingCorrect
  2. BThe house of the LORD
  3. CThe upper room
  4. DThe tower of the flock

Answer: The tent of meeting

Exodus 40:34-35 · ESV

The name states the purpose. God appointed one place where he would meet with his people and speak with them, so the tent was not a house God needed but a meeting place he granted to a nation that could not otherwise come near.

Exodus 40:34-35 records the cloud covering the tent of meeting, and the phrase recurs through Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers as the ordinary designation of the sanctuary.

Why not this one. That title belongs chiefly to the later temple Solomon built on a fixed site. The wilderness sanctuary was a portable tent that moved whenever the cloud lifted.

Medium Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

Which of the seven annual Israelite feasts fell fifty days after the waving of the first sheaf, and required all males to travel to the central sanctuary?

  1. AThe Feast of Trumpets
  2. BThe Feast of Weeks (Shavuot)Correct
  3. CThe Feast of Booths (Sukkot)
  4. DThe Passover

Answer: The Feast of Weeks (Shavuot)

Leviticus 23:15–16 · ESV

Leviticus 23 binds the two events together: a sheaf of the first grain is waved before the LORD on the day after the Sabbath, and from that day Israel counts seven full weeks to the feast fifty days later. It is one of the three pilgrimage festivals at which every male was to appear before the LORD. Acts 2 places the outpouring of the Spirit on this day, and 1 Corinthians 15:20 calls Christ the firstfruits.

Leviticus 23:9–16; Deuteronomy 16:16

Why not this one. Trumpets falls on the first day of the seventh month and is genuinely one of the seven appointed feasts, which makes it a fair guess. It involved no harvest presentation and no journey to the sanctuary; it was a day of rest announced by blasts of the trumpet.

Hard Old Testament — The Law & Tabernacle

Numbers 4 divides the Levites' duties among three clans. Which clan carried the ark and the holy furnishings on their shoulders?

  1. AThe KohathitesCorrect
  2. BThe Gershonites
  3. CThe Merarites
  4. DThe sons of Ithamar

Answer: The Kohathites

Numbers 4:4-15 · ESV

The most holy things were assigned to Kohath, and because they could not be touched or even looked at uncovered, Aaron and his sons wrapped each item first. Kohath received no wagons at all and bore the load on the shoulder.

Numbers 4:4-15 assigns the most holy things to the Kohathites, and Numbers 7:9 explains that they were given no carts because of that service.

Why not this one. Gershon carried the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, screens and hangings, a real and heavy charge, but one transported by wagon rather than on the shoulder.
