Questions and answers

Easy Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

What was the tenth and final plague on Egypt?

  1. AThe death of the firstborn.Correct
  2. BThree days of thick darkness.
  3. CA plague of locusts.
  4. DThe death of all livestock.

Answer: The death of the firstborn.

Exodus 11:5 · ESV

After nine plagues Pharaoh still would not let Israel go, so at midnight the LORD struck every firstborn in Egypt, from the heir on the throne to the captive in the dungeon and the firstborn of the livestock. Pharaoh was himself reckoned divine and his son the divine heir, so the blow landed on the throne as directly as on the fields. There was no house without someone dead, and that night Pharaoh sent Israel away.

Exodus 11:4-5; 12:29-31

Why not this one. Darkness is the ninth plague and the last before the end, a darkness that could be felt, shutting down the sun over the land of a sun-worshiping empire. It broke Egypt's confidence but not Pharaoh's will; he was still bargaining when Moses left him.

Medium Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

In Exodus 19, on what mountain did God give Moses the Ten Commandments?

  1. AMount Sinai.Correct
  2. BMount Horeb.
  3. CMount Nebo.
  4. DMount Zion.

Answer: Mount Sinai.

Exodus 19:20 · ESV

Three months out of Egypt, Israel camped before the mountain, and the LORD came down on Sinai in fire and smoke with the whole mountain trembling. What follows has the shape of an ancient covenant treaty: the great king names himself, recites what he has done for the people, lays out his stipulations, and provides for the document to be kept. The tablets are given there, on the mountain the verse calls Sinai.

Exodus 19:18-20; 20:1-17

Why not this one. Horeb is the same mountain under its other name, and Deuteronomy regularly calls the law-giving mountain Horeb, so this is a defensible instinct. But the question follows Exodus, and Exodus 19 says the LORD descended on Sinai.

Hard Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

According to Exodus 12:12, on what besides Egypt's firstborn did the LORD say he would execute judgments?

  1. AAll the gods of EgyptCorrect
  2. BThe magicians of Pharaoh's court
  3. CThe chariots and horsemen of Egypt
  4. DThe taskmasters set over Israel

Answer: All the gods of Egypt

Exodus 12:12 · ESV

The plagues are not merely disasters but a lawsuit against Egypt's deities. On the night of the tenth plague the LORD announces judgment on the gods of Egypt, showing that the contest was never merely between Moses and Pharaoh but between the living God and the powers Egypt trusted.

Exodus 12:12; Numbers 33:4 says Egypt buried its firstborn while the LORD executed judgments on their gods.

Why not this one. The chariots are indeed destroyed, but at the sea in Exodus 14, several days later. Exodus 12:12 names the gods of Egypt as the object of judgment on Passover night.

Easy Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

Into what river were Hebrew baby boys commanded to be thrown by Pharaoh's decree?

  1. AThe Jordan
  2. BThe Euphrates
  3. CThe NileCorrect
  4. DThe Red Sea

Answer: The Nile

Exodus 1:22 · ESV

When the Hebrew midwives refused to kill the boys at birth and told Pharaoh the women delivered too quickly, he issued the order to all his people instead: every son born was to be cast into the river. The water that fed Egypt was made the instrument of the decree. That same water turns to blood in the first plague, and Pharaoh's army is finally drowned in the sea.

Exodus 1:15-22

Why not this one. Egypt and drowning do belong together in memory, since Pharaoh's own army ends up under the Red Sea. But the decree in Exodus 1:22 concerns the Nile, the river running past every Hebrew household in Goshen.

Medium Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

What natural phenomenon did God use to drive back the Red Sea before Israel crossed?

  1. AA mighty storm
  2. BA strong east windCorrect
  3. CA pillar of fire
  4. DA great earthquake

Answer: A strong east wind

Exodus 14:21 · ESV

A strong east wind blew all night at the LORD's command and pushed the water back until the seabed was dry land. The wind is named as the means, but the timing, the water standing like walls, and its return on the Egyptians show whose hand was working through it. The song in the next chapter credits the blast of God's nostrils for the same act.

Exodus 14:21; 15:8

Why not this one. The pillar was present that night, shifting from in front of Israel to behind them so that it gave light to one camp and darkness to the other. Its work was to hold Pharaoh's army back; the water was opened by the wind.

Hard Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

During the plague of hail, which part of Egypt was spared?

  1. AThe land of Goshen, where the people of Israel wereCorrect
  2. BThe store city of Pithom
  3. CThe land immediately around Pharaoh's palace
  4. DThe fields belonging to the priests of Egypt

Answer: The land of Goshen, where the people of Israel were

Exodus 9:26 · ESV

Hail struck down everything in the field throughout Egypt, but there was none in Goshen where Israel lived. The distinction God draws between his people and Egypt, announced first at the flies, is stated again at the livestock, the hail, the darkness, and the death of the firstborn.

Exodus 9:26; the parallel statements appear in Exodus 8:22-23, 9:4, 10:23, and 11:7.

Why not this one. Egypt's priests receive no exemption anywhere in the plague narrative. The LORD says the opposite: that he will execute judgments on all the gods of Egypt whom those priests served.

Easy Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

Which annual feast did the LORD institute so Israel would remember their deliverance from Egypt?

  1. AThe PassoverCorrect
  2. BThe Feast of Booths
  3. CThe Day of Atonement
  4. DThe Feast of Trumpets

Answer: The Passover

Exodus 12:14 · ESV

The night the destroyer passed over the blood-marked houses was to be kept as a memorial feast throughout Israel's generations. Each year the meal rehearsed how the LORD brought his people out through the death of a substitute, and fathers were to explain its meaning when their children asked.

Exodus 12:14 commands the perpetual observance, and Exodus 12:24-27 provides for teaching the next generation.

Why not this one. Booths does commemorate the wilderness years, when Israel lived in temporary shelters (Leviticus 23:42-43), but it is an autumn harvest feast, not the memorial of the night Israel left Egypt.

Medium Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

What was the blood smeared on the doorposts to protect Israelite homes during the Passover?

  1. AThe blood of a lamb.Correct
  2. BThe blood of a goat.
  3. CHyssop dipped in olive oil.
  4. DCedar oil mixed with red dye.

Answer: The blood of a lamb.

Exodus 12:7 · ESV

Each household took an unblemished lamb, killed it at twilight, and put its blood on the two doorposts and the lintel using a bunch of hyssop. The blood was not a charm but the mark of a death already died in that house, and where the LORD saw it he passed over. Paul calls Christ our Passover lamb, and John notes at the cross that the rule against breaking a bone of the lamb was kept.

Exodus 12:5-7, 22; 1 Corinthians 5:7; John 19:36

Why not this one. Hyssop really is part of the rite, the brush used to strike the blood onto the frame of the door, so half of this is right. But what it carried was blood, not oil; the sign on the house was the life of the lamb.

Hard Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

Which plagues were the Egyptian magicians able to reproduce by their secret arts?

  1. ABlood and frogsCorrect
  2. BFrogs and gnats
  3. CBlood, frogs, and gnats
  4. DBlood, frogs, gnats, and flies

Answer: Blood and frogs

Exodus 7:22; 8:7 · ESV

The magicians matched the first two plagues, turning water to blood and bringing up frogs, which only added to Egypt's misery rather than relieving it. At the third they failed and told Pharaoh it was the finger of God, and they never compete again.

Exodus 7:22 and 8:7 record their success; Exodus 8:18-19 records their failure at the gnats.

Why not this one. The gnats are precisely where the imitation stops. The magicians tried by their secret arts to produce them and could not, which is what forces their confession before Pharaoh.

Easy Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

What animal's blood were the Israelites instructed to paint on their doorposts at the first Passover?

  1. AA goat
  2. BA bull
  3. CA dove
  4. DA lambCorrect

Answer: A lamb

Exodus 12:7 · ESV

The animal was chosen on the tenth of the month, kept until the fourteenth, and killed at twilight, with its blood struck on the two doorposts and the lintel. It had to be an unblemished male in its first year, roasted whole, with none of its bones broken. John the Baptist points to Jesus as the Lamb of God, and Paul says plainly that Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed.

Exodus 12:3-13, 46; John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 5:7

Why not this one. Exodus 12:5 does allow the animal to be taken from the sheep or from the goats, so a goat is not outside the instruction. But the word the passage uses and the term Scripture carries forward, all the way to the Lamb in Revelation, is the lamb.

Medium Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

What practical advice did Jethro give Moses after observing him judge the people from morning until evening?

  1. ADelegate the work to Aaron and his sons only
  2. BAppoint able men to judge minor cases so Moses only handles major casesCorrect
  3. CEstablish a council of seventy elders to share leadership
  4. DWrite down all the laws so the people could judge themselves

Answer: Appoint able men to judge minor cases so Moses only handles major cases

Exodus 18:21–22 · ESV

Jethro watched Moses sit alone from morning until evening with the people standing around him, and told him the thing was not good and that he would wear himself out. His counsel was to teach the people the statutes, then place able men who fear God and hate a bribe over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, so they would judge the small matters and bring only the hard ones to Moses. Moses listened and did all he had said.

Exodus 18:13-26

Why not this one. Seventy elders really are appointed to help carry the people, which makes this feel like the same episode. But that comes later, in Numbers 11, at the LORD's own initiative, and it concerns bearing the burden of the people rather than the tiered courts Jethro proposed.

Hard Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

In which wilderness, between Elim and Rephidim, was the manna first given?

  1. AThe wilderness of SinCorrect
  2. BThe wilderness of Shur
  3. CThe wilderness of Paran
  4. DThe wilderness of Zin

Answer: The wilderness of Sin

Exodus 16:1 · ESV

Israel came to the wilderness of Sin on the fifteenth day of the second month after leaving Egypt, grumbled that they had been better fed as slaves, and there received quail in the evening and manna in the morning. From there they moved by stages to Rephidim.

Exodus 16:1-15 records the grumbling and the provision; Exodus 17:1 records the move to Rephidim.

Why not this one. Zin is a different region much later in the journey, near Kadesh, where Miriam died and where Moses struck the rock at Meribah (Numbers 20:1). Only the similar spelling connects the two.
