Questions and answers

Easy Miracles of the Bible

Whose walls fell down flat after Israel marched around the city and the people shouted?

  1. AJerichoCorrect
  2. BAi
  3. CHazor
  4. DGibeon

Answer: Jericho

Joshua 6:20 · ESV

Israel circled Jericho once a day for six days and seven times on the seventh, and at the trumpet blast and the shout the wall fell down flat so the army went up into the city. The first city of the conquest fell without a siege, marking the land as God's gift rather than Israel's achievement. Rahab and her household, who had hidden the spies, were the one part of the city spared.

Joshua 6:20 reports the wall falling at the shout.

Why not this one. Ai was taken next, but by ambush and by fire after Israel's first defeat there, not by marching and a collapsing wall.

Easy New Testament — Acts of the Apostles

From which place did the apostles return to Jerusalem after watching Jesus ascend?

  1. AThe Mount of OlivesCorrect
  2. BMount Carmel
  3. CMount Sinai
  4. DMount Hermon

Answer: The Mount of Olives

Acts 1:12 · ESV

Luke places the ascension on the Mount of Olives, which he notes lies a Sabbath day's journey from Jerusalem. Two men in white robes told the watching apostles that Jesus would come back in the same way they had seen him go, and they walked into the city and gathered in the upper room to pray.

Acts 1:9-12 describes the ascension, the promise of his return, and the short walk back to the city.

Why not this one. Sinai is where the law came through Moses, and Stephen recalls it at length in his speech in Acts 7, so it is genuinely present in the book. But it lies far to the south, and no event of Acts 1 takes place there.

Easy New Testament — The Gospels

What was the disciple Matthew’s occupation before following Jesus?

  1. AA tax collector.Correct
  2. BA fisherman.
  3. CA carpenter.
  4. DA Pharisee.

Answer: A tax collector.

Matthew 9:9 · ESV

He was sitting at the tax booth when Jesus called him, collecting for Rome from his own countrymen, which is why tax collectors and sinners are so often named in the same breath. Mark and Luke tell the same call but give the man's name as Levi. He rises and follows, and the next scene is a meal at his house that the Pharisees object to.

Matthew 9:9–13; Mark 2:14

Why not this one. Four of the Twelve were fishermen, so that trade is the one most associated with the disciples. Matthew's trade is the whole point of his call story, since he is exactly the sort of man the Pharisees did not expect to be summoned.

Easy Old Testament — Genesis & Creation

What was the sign of God’s covenant with Noah after the flood?

  1. AA rainbow.Correct
  2. BA burning torch.
  3. CA pillar of cloud.
  4. DA dove with an olive branch.

Answer: A rainbow.

Genesis 9:13 · ESV

After the flood God sets his bow in the cloud as the sign of a covenant made not only with Noah but with every living creature and with the earth itself. The promise runs one way: he will never again cut off all flesh by a flood. A bow is a weapon, and this one is hung in the sky pointed away, and God says that when he sees it he will remember, which puts the remembering on his side rather than ours.

Genesis 9:12–17

Why not this one. The dove and the olive leaf come from Genesis 8:11 and have become the standing emblem of the whole story, so they slide easily into the place of the sign. The dove was Noah's way of testing the water level; the bow is what God himself named.

Easy Old Testament — Joshua, Judges & Ruth

On the final circuit around Jericho, what did the people do when the priests blew the long trumpet blast?

  1. AThey shouted a great shoutCorrect
  2. BThey sang the song of Moses
  3. CThey lit torches along the walls
  4. DThey fell on their faces in silence

Answer: They shouted a great shout

Joshua 6:16, 20 · ESV

Israel had marched in silence until Joshua gave the word; at the long blast the people shouted and the wall fell down flat, so that they went up into the city. The city was taken by obedience to a strange command, not by siege.

Joshua 6:10 orders the silence, Joshua 6:16 gives the command to shout, and Joshua 6:20 records the shout and the collapse of the wall.

Why not this one. Silence was commanded for the marching days, which makes this tempting, but the silence ended at the trumpet blast. The wall fell as the people shouted.

Easy Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

What animal's blood were the Israelites instructed to paint on their doorposts at the first Passover?

  1. AA goat
  2. BA bull
  3. CA dove
  4. DA lambCorrect

Answer: A lamb

Exodus 12:7 · ESV

The animal was chosen on the tenth of the month, kept until the fourteenth, and killed at twilight, with its blood struck on the two doorposts and the lintel. It had to be an unblemished male in its first year, roasted whole, with none of its bones broken. John the Baptist points to Jesus as the Lamb of God, and Paul says plainly that Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed.

Exodus 12:3-13, 46; John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 5:7

Why not this one. Exodus 12:5 does allow the animal to be taken from the sheep or from the goats, so a goat is not outside the instruction. But the word the passage uses and the term Scripture carries forward, all the way to the Lamb in Revelation, is the lamb.

Easy Old Testament — The Patriarchs

Jacob served seven years for Rachel, but on the wedding night Laban gave him which woman instead?

  1. ALeahCorrect
  2. BBilhah
  3. CZilpah
  4. DMilcah

Answer: Leah

Genesis 29:23–25 · ESV

Laban substituted his older daughter Leah, and Jacob discovered the deception only when morning came. Laban defended himself by appealing to a local custom of marrying off the firstborn first. Jacob, who had won his own brother's blessing by pretending to be the elder son, was now deceived by an appeal to the rights of the elder.

Genesis 29:23–25 records the substitution and Jacob's protest, and Genesis 29:26–30 gives Laban's excuse and the second seven years of service.

Why not this one. Zilpah was not a daughter of Laban but the servant he gave to Leah; she later bore Gad and Asher to Jacob.

Easy People & Names

Which son of Jacob, the firstborn of Rachel, was sold into Egypt by his brothers and rose to become second-in-command to Pharaoh?

  1. ABenjamin.
  2. BJudah.
  3. CJoseph.Correct
  4. DLevi.

Answer: Joseph.

Genesis 37–41 · ESV

He was the eleventh of Jacob's twelve sons and the first of Rachel's two, sold by his brothers to traders bound for Egypt at seventeen and standing before Pharaoh at thirty. After interpreting the dreams of the seven fat and seven lean years, Pharaoh set him over all Egypt, gave him the signet ring, and had him ride in the second chariot, with only the throne itself above him.

Genesis 37 through 41, especially Genesis 41:40-43

Why not this one. He really was the youngest son, born last to Rachel, which is exactly what the question's wording pulls toward. He never held office in Egypt, though; he stayed in Canaan with his father and appears in the story only as the brother Joseph demanded to see.

Easy Places & Geography

Where did Jesus grow up?

  1. ABethlehem.
  2. BJerusalem.
  3. CNazareth.Correct
  4. DCapernaum.

Answer: Nazareth.

Luke 2:51 · ESV

After the trip to the temple when he was twelve, Luke says Jesus went down with Joseph and Mary to Nazareth and was submissive to them. Nazareth was a small hill village in lower Galilee with no mention anywhere in the Old Testament, which is the point behind Nathanael's dismissive question about whether anything good could come from there. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, but Nazareth is where he was raised.

Luke 2:51; John 1:46

Why not this one. Bethlehem is the birthplace, and it carries all the weight of the Micah prophecy, so it feels like the home town. But the family left it while Jesus was still small, going first to Egypt and then north to Galilee.

Easy Miracles of the Bible

What happened to the curtain of the temple at the moment Jesus died?

  1. AIt was torn in two from top to bottomCorrect
  2. BIt was rolled back by the priests
  3. CIt was consumed by fire
  4. DIt fell from its rings to the ground

Answer: It was torn in two from top to bottom

Matthew 27:51 · ESV

As Jesus yielded up his spirit the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tearing came from above, signifying that God himself had opened the way into the holy places through the death of his Son. Matthew adds that tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints were raised.

Matthew 27:50-51 records the tearing, and Hebrews 10:19-20 explains it.

Why not this one. No priest touched it; the point of the account is that the barrier was opened by God from the top, not managed by the temple staff.

Easy New Testament — Acts of the Apostles

Who was the first Christian martyr?

  1. AStephen.Correct
  2. BJames.
  3. CPhilip.
  4. DBarnabas.

Answer: Stephen.

Acts 7:59–60 · ESV

Stephen, one of the seven chosen to oversee the daily distribution, was seized for his preaching, tried before the council, and stoned outside the city. As he died he asked the Lord Jesus to receive his spirit and prayed that the sin not be held against his killers, echoing his Master. Luke notes that the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul, tying the first martyrdom directly to the future apostle to the Gentiles.

Acts 7:54-60; Acts 8:1

Why not this one. James the brother of John was indeed killed for the faith, and he was the first of the Twelve to die. But Herod put him to the sword in Acts 12, several chapters after Stephen's death.

Easy New Testament — The Gospels

What sign did Judas give to identify Jesus?

  1. AA kiss.Correct
  2. BA handshake.
  3. CPointing at Jesus from a distance.
  4. DCalling Jesus by name loudly.

Answer: A kiss.

Matthew 26:48 · ESV

Judas needed a sign because the arrest came at night in an olive grove and the armed party with him did not know Jesus by sight. He had arranged the signal beforehand and greeted him as Rabbi. Luke preserves the reply, a question about whether the Son of Man is betrayed with a kiss.

Matthew 26:47–50; Luke 22:47–48

Why not this one. This sounds like the safer method for a betrayer and fits the torches and the dark. But Matthew says the arranged sign was a greeting close enough to kiss, and that closeness is what makes the moment what it is.

Easy Old Testament — Genesis & Creation

From what substance did God form man's body in Genesis 2?

  1. AClay from the riverbank
  2. BDust from the groundCorrect
  3. CSand from the sea
  4. DStone from the earth

Answer: Dust from the ground

Genesis 2:7 · ESV

Genesis 2:7 has the LORD God forming the man out of dust from the ground and breathing into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man becomes a living creature. Both halves carry weight: he shares the substance of the very ground he was made to work, and he lives only by God's breath. The sentence in Genesis 3:19 sends him back to that dust, and Paul builds on the same verse in 1 Corinthians 15:45-47.

Genesis 2:7

Why not this one. Clay is how the surrounding cultures told the story of humanity's making, and potter imagery does appear later in Isaiah 64:8 and Romans 9. Genesis says dust, the loose dry ground, which is exactly what makes the death sentence of returning to dust fit.

Easy Old Testament — Joshua, Judges & Ruth

Where did Deborah sit while the people of Israel came up to her for judgment?

  1. AUnder a palm tree between Ramah and BethelCorrect
  2. BUnder an oak at Ophrah
  3. CAt the gate of Shechem
  4. DBeside the tent of meeting at Shiloh

Answer: Under a palm tree between Ramah and Bethel

Judges 4:4-5 · ESV

Deborah, a prophetess, judged Israel from a fixed spot in the hill country of Ephraim that came to bear her name. The people of Israel came up to her there for judgment, and it is from that place that she sent for Barak and delivered to him the word the LORD had already given for the campaign.

Judges 4:4-5 names the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim.

Why not this one. Ophrah is Gideon's town, where the angel of the LORD sat under the terebinth while Gideon beat out wheat. It has nothing to do with Deborah.

Easy Old Testament — Moses & the Exodus

What was Moses’ brother’s name, who served as high priest?

  1. AAaron.Correct
  2. BEleazar.
  3. CPhinehas.
  4. DNadab.

Answer: Aaron.

Exodus 4:14 · ESV

Aaron is three years older than Moses and is sent out to meet him in the wilderness when Moses balks at speaking. He carries the staff for the early plagues, and after Sinai he and his sons are set apart for the priesthood, with Aaron alone entering the Most Holy Place once a year on the Day of Atonement. Hebrews sets that yearly repetition against Christ's single offering.

Exodus 4:14; 7:7; 28:1

Why not this one. Eleazar does hold the high priesthood, and the office ran through his line after Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD. But he is Aaron's son and successor, not Moses' brother.

Easy Old Testament — The Patriarchs

Joseph's silver cup was found in the sack of which brother?

  1. ABenjaminCorrect
  2. BJudah
  3. CReuben
  4. DSimeon

Answer: Benjamin

Genesis 44:12 · ESV

Joseph, still unrecognized, ordered his steward to hide the silver cup in the youngest brother's sack and then to overtake them on the road. The search ran from the eldest to the youngest, and the cup turned up with Benjamin. The brothers tore their clothes and went back to the city, which set up Judah's plea and Joseph's disclosure.

Genesis 44:1–13 records the planted cup, the pursuit, the search, and the brothers' return.

Why not this one. Judah had made himself surety for Benjamin and offered to stay as a slave in his place, but the cup was not found in his sack.
